We built this kitchen as a piece of furniture, not from a set of individual carcasses, as is usual. We went with Douglas fir, partly as a nod to the client's Scottish roots and partly just because we like it. The wood's natural character comes out with a clear, unpigmented finish, letting it age naturally and develop a patina over time.
Inset doors, cut-through handles, a Belfast sink, and non-integrated appliances give the kitchen a relaxed, informal style. The granite worktop is both practical and good-looking.
